San Antonio Spurs Add Talented Guard in 2024 NBA Mock Draft
Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports

In a recent NBA Mock Draft, the San Antonio Spurs were able to upgrade at the guard position for next season.

The San Antonio Spurs hit the jackpot in the 2023 NBA Lottery when they got the first overall pick. That pick resulted in the privilege to select eventual Rookie of the Year, Victor Wembanyama. As expected Wemby has become a force already in the NBA on both ends of the court, and it looks like he is going to be an MVP candidate sooner rather than later.

In the NBA Lottery this season, the San Antonio Spurs did well as they got the fourth pick. Being in the top 5 should present the Spurs with the opportunity to continue to build around their young superstar. In a recent ESPN Mock Draft, they had the Spurs taking Kentucky point guard, Rob Dillingham. Here’s what they had to say about the pick.

The Spurs struck gold in last year’s draft lottery, and this year is icing on the cake while building around Victor Wembanyama’s star power. The Spurs’ messy Jeremy Sochan experiment only amplified the need for a point guard who can complement Wembanyama’s extraordinary skill level, making the draft’s top backcourt prospects the natural place to look. Dillingham’s combination of perimeter shooting, ballhandling, and pick-and-roll playmaking gives him the significant offensive potential to grow into long-term. His size and defensive limitations could be mitigated alongside a future Defensive Player of the Year-caliber rim-protector such as Wembanyama cleaning up mistakes behind him. – Givony

The potential pairing of Dillingham and Wembanyama sounds very appealing. Dillingham had a very good freshman season for Kentucky, and he continued to improve as the season went on. Dillingham can do a lot of good things on the offensive end of the court, as he was a 44 percent 3-point shooter with the Wildcats, and can also attack the rim.

Getting a great point guard for Wembanyama should be a top priority for the Spurs. With an expected big jump for Wembanyama next season, the San Antonio Spurs could be in the playoff conversation. Adding a player like Dillingham should help get even more out of their superstar in his sophomore season.
